In the devastating aftermath of the wildfires on the Hawaiian islands, we've seen some of the best elements of our country's character as folks nationwide have stepped up to support those facing unfathomable tragedy.

Unfortunately, a small, powerful group of opportunists – scammers and predatory land developers – have also emerged, looking to profit from and exploit others' pain. Corporate property developers and scammers are targeting Maui homeowners and farmers to coerce them to sell their property for far less than fair market value, or to sign it over altogether.

We're not going to let that happen.

As we begin to move from the disaster response phase into planning and rebuilding, One Country Project is partnering with like-minded organizations to demand that Congress immediately protect the property rights of Native and local Hawaiians and ensure they retain ownership of their homes, farmland, and fields. Hawai'i conjures up images of beaches and high-rise hotels, but most folks who stick exclusively to their all-inclusive resorts might not realize that Maui is mostly rural. Folks there live in small mountainside communities and as farmers and ranchers, and depend on local staples like fish, deer, and of course, pineapple.

Local farmers have just lost everything – homes, properties, equipment, and acres of crops of pineapple, cacao, sweet onions, and bananas, but we're joining the fight to make sure that they can rebuild in safe, sustainable ways that are resistant to natural disaster dangers for the long-term.

But in the fear and confusion of the disaster, there's a real risk that those family farms will be stolen away before they can recover. Sign here to join thousands of others in demanding Congress pass legislation to protect property rights now!
