West Coast ports face "uphill climb" to regain lost volume

Logistics property developer Prologis predicts the combined Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex may only regain up to 50% of cargo volumes that have been diverted to east coast ports over the past year that experts attribute to ship backups, dockworker contract uncertainties, China's lagging economy and changing import strategies. While the West Coast remains a preferred US gateway for many importers, Gene Seroka, executive director at the Port of Los Angeles, expects it will be "an uphill climb" to regain lost volume and notes, "Our job now is to be absolutely relentless in going after every pound of freight possible."

Unemployment within the US transpiration sector increased from 4.6% in July to 4.9% in August and remains above the 3.9% overall national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Bureau primarily attributes the increase to the collapse of Yellow Corp. and Arrive Logistics' David Spencer predicts it will "get worse before it gets better in terms of trucking conditions and employment levels."
