Do you have just a minute, Friend? It’s important.
We exposed the skyrocketing hate and disinformation taking place on Twitter. Now, Elon Musk is suing us. I hope you’ll allow me a moment to explain how the Center for Countering Digital Hate got here.
Social media platforms changed the way we communicate. In the process, companies like Facebook and Twitter – and their CEOs – became unfathomably powerful. They have allowed their communities, and the algorithms that power them, to become breeding grounds for hate speech and lies.
Now, mediums like TikTok are fueling a rise in eating disorders and self-harm. High-profile women are receiving a slew of hateful direct messages on Instagram. And on Twitter, everything from racism to antisemitism to attacks on the LGBTQ+ community are running rampant, and Elon Musk is doing everything he can to deflect blame and refuse to take responsibility.
CCDH was created to expose the vast amounts of online hate and disinformation, and importantly, hold people like Elon Musk accountable for spreading it. But now, Musk is targeting us with a lawsuit because we are the leading voice exposing the hate he’s allowed to take root on Twitter. We need to show Musk that grassroots activists won’t stand for his bullying and intimidation, which is why I’m reaching out with a request:
Will you sign on to our petition condemning Elon Musk’s attacks on researchers? As Musk attempts to silence us, we’re counting on 500 people to speak out ahead of our petition deadline at 11:59 p.m. Please SIGN ON NOW >>>
Elon Musk may think he can use his resources and power to stop us – but we will not back down, and we will not rest, until social media platforms like his do something about the dangerous hate and disinformation spreading like wildfire. Thank you for doing your part.
