Medicaid is a lifeline for over 90 million vulnerable individuals in the United States, providing crucial healthcare support to low-income children, pregnant women, adults, seniors, and people with disabilities. However, the future of Medicaid access is at risk, and we need your urgent action to ensure its protection.
At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act was enacted to ensure that people remain continuously enrolled in state Medicaid programs until the end of the public health emergency. This provision was tied to enhanced federal funding. However, in 2022, Congress decided to end this critical continuous enrollment provision on March 31, 2023.
The consequences are dire. Between 7.8 million and 24.4 million individuals, including millions of children, could lose their vital Medicaid coverage as states move to remove residents from the program.

The majority of those losing coverage were dropped due to technicalities rather than being ineligible based on income limits. Such carelessness threatens the healthcare access of countless low-income Americans, especially at a time when equitable access to COVID-related resources is crucial.
President Biden has emphasized the need to slow down the purge to prevent administrative errors. However, more decisive action is required. It's time for his administration to publicly identify states facing serious issues, utilize their granted authority to monitor Medicaid processes and hold states accountable by withholding funding if improper purges continue.
