On this day in 2017, the Trump administration ended DACA — setting up years of attacks against the program and our community. I remember the day well. I watched Attorney General Jeff Sessions announce the life-changing protections afforded to so many immigrant youth were being rescinded with just the stroke of a pen.
But that wasn’t the end of the story.
Immediately after, I watched with pride as our community came together and organized. It was an uncertain moment, but we recommitted to the fight, and pushed our demands all the way up to the Supreme Court.
We won that battle, but the fight is not over, especially not now that a right-wing federal judge from Texas blocked new DACA applications, and will issue another decision any day now on the future of the program.
United We Dream Action is leading the fight for more permanent solutions than DACA for all undocumented people. Today’s anniversary is a reminder that DACA has always been a band-aid solution, vulnerable to attacks from right-wing administrations and judges.
That’s why we’re using this anniversary to demand more. We need a path to citizenship that’s not subject to the whims of whichever party is in power. A program whose protections can be stolen away by the decision of one person is not and has never been good enough.
