John, this bill would alter the NC State Board of Elections, and threaten the very process of our elections.

Tell your legislators to oppose a rollback of voting rights in North Carolina.»

John,

While hard-working taxpayers were taking off for the Labor Day weekend, bad politicians in the NC legislature were furthering their death grip on power at the expense of our voting rights by fast-tracking Senate Bill 749. This bill would alter the NC State Board of Elections, and threaten the very process of our elections. North Carolinians forcefully rejected a similar attempt to alter the State Board of Elections in the 2018 elections by a margin of 61%-38%. Because it is so unpopular with voters, they plan to sneak it through this week without any input from North Carolinians!

Contact your legislators and let your voice be heard.

Here are all the ways SB 749 could affect the NC State Board of elections:
  • change the makeup of the NC State Board of Elections to a deadlocked eight-member board appointed by lawmakers.
  • change the makeup of all 100 county boards of elections to a deadlocked four-member board appointed by lawmakers.
  • lead to drastic cuts to Early Voting. Because county boards must provide approval for one-stop early voting sites, it is much more likely that an evenly-partisan board will come to a tie on these decisions. Because there is no tiebreaker mechanism in the bill, deadlock boards would mean only one early voting location in each county with limited hours would be available for the most popular form of voting in North Carolina.
  • give lawmakers even more authority over our elections. This bill could allow the legislature to also select the State Board of Elections board chair and/or executive director, giving them almost total control over our elections.
Act Now! Help us protect our elections in North Carolina.

In order to have a safe and clean environment, we need a fair and healthy democracy. SB749 defies the will of voters, and puts in jeopardy that democracy. Lawmakers should respect that clear result and stop trying to meddle with the board of elections. This extreme proposal would give even more power to state lawmakers and create partisan gridlock in our elections in ways that could have devastating effects on Early Voting and other vital election functions.

Thank you for your efforts to help us protect the right to vote.
