MDIFW manages more than 69 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) across the state, encompassing over 110,000 acres. The purpose of the wildlife management area system is to provide a statewide, ecologically based system of land holdings for the protection and enhancement of important wildlife habitats that also provides opportunity for public recreation, *including hunting.*

*All MDIFW-owned Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), except Steve Powell WMA (Swan Island), and portions of Steep Falls and Killick Pond WMA, are open for general-law hunting and trapping.*

*Requirements for hunting on a WMA*

*Stands:*  Removable stands or blinds, such as ladder, hang on, pop-up blinds etc. when placed for more than one day require a permit to hunt on MDIFW-owned WMAs and must be clearly labeled with the hunters' name and address. Permanent structures are prohibited. Permission is not needed if blind and stand are removed daily.

*Bear Baiting:* Placing or hunting over bait for any species and bear trapping is authorized by permit only.

*Game Cameras:* A person may utilize game cameras on WMAs without landowner permission. All cameras must be labeled with the owner's name and contact information.

Contact the appropriate Regional MDIFW office for permit inquiries. [ [link removed] ]

Remember to share the woods

When you are hunting you are likely sharing the woods with fellow hunters, hikers, horseback riders, snowmobilers, and other outdoor enthusiasts, so be courteous, be responsible, and be respectful! After all, it is exciting that more and more people are finding time to enjoy the Maine outdoors. With millions of acres of land, there is plenty of opportunity for everyone!
