** Hunger Free America in the News

An estimated 1,000 migrants arrive in New York City every day. Alone, in a new country, with young children and no legal ability to work, migrant mothers don’t know how they’re going to feed their families.

CBS News recently highlighted our important work ([link removed]) helping these families ([link removed]) .

At our request, NYC has given us direct access to the city-run shelters so we can connect asylum-seekers with WIC, the federally funded initiative that provides pregnant women and caretakers of young children with access to nutritious foods — including formula for infants and baby food for toddlers. It’s the only federally funded safety net program that anyone can access, regardless of immigration status. We took on this life-saving work without any new City funding.

** HFA Rings the NSDAQ Opening Bell
in Honor of Hunger Action Month

Last week HFA CEO Joel Berg commemorated the start of Hunger Action Month by ringing the NASDAQ Opening Bell. Joel's powerful speech reminded us that in order to fight hunger, we must fight poverty, and that ending hunger truly does lift us all.

** Join HFA for the 9/11 Day of Service
------------------------------------------------------------
Hunger Free America operates the USDA Hunger Hotline, an essential resource providing information to people in need on their local food banks, pantries, and SNAP/WIC offices. Volunteers will place calls to food pantries, soup kitchens, and SNAP/WIC offices across the country to verify and update existing data in our National Database. The HFA team will provide an introduction and training for the task, and support participants throughout the session. Participants need access to a computer and phone.

** Join the AmeriCorps VISTA Program
------------------------------------------------------------

The HFA AmericCorps VISTA program engages VISTA members and partnering organizations in moving families beyond the soup kitchen by breaking down barriers and providing improved access to healthful, nutritious foods.

Members will assist unemployed and under-employed people obtain job training, job placement, and financial literacy services; improve access to food from government and nonprofit sources for targeted populations in particular and food insecure people in general; enable residents of food deserts to access healthier foods through farmers markets and community gardens; more low-income children to obtain free school breakfasts and summer meals; effective nonprofit groups fighting hunger and poverty to raise more money and recruit and manage more volunteers, particularly high-impact and skilled volunteers.
