Dear MoveOn member,

Have you heard the shocking news? The Supreme Court just dealt a
devastating blow to equal opportunity and diversity by gutting affirmative
action but leaving protections in place for legacy admissions. Their
decision will favor white and wealthy folks while pushing Black and brown
folks to the margins.^1 And we can’t let this injustice go unchallenged!

Here is the deal: This ruling is a total disaster for equality and racial
justice. The conservative Supreme Court justices are in complete denial
about the reality of systemic racism and the urgent need to address
historical injustices. They're snuffing out the flame of diverse
perspectives and abandoning the promises made to Black and brown families
about fair opportunities for education, work, and economic stability. By
axing race-conscious admissions but leaving protections in place for
legacy admissions, the court is perpetuating a system that caters to the
privileged and widens the inequality gap.

But not everything is lost! There are steps colleges and universities can
take to prioritize diversity and inclusion amid this decision, as public
schools in the state of California had to do when affirmative action was
voted down almost 30 years ago.^2 If you want to see colleges and
universities in your area prioritize addressing educational disparities in
the wake of this affirmative action decision, start a petition today.

[ [link removed] ]Access to education should be a right, not a luxury! Will you join me
by starting a petition on MoveOn's free petition platform?

This ruling is out of touch with our country’s current needs. Not everyone
can be born into a legacy of wealthy alumni or donors or can supplement
with expensive private school tuition, well-funded school districts,
after-school private tutors, or extra-curricular activities and
volunteering opportunities that boost college applications.

We all benefit from diverse communities that bring together different
voices, experiences, and backgrounds. It's the lifeblood of a strong
democracy, and we'll fight tooth and nail to protect it. We can't let this
decision roll back decades of progress and trample on the principles of
equal protection. [ [link removed] ]Start a petition today and demand equal opportunity

Want to support MoveOn's work? Voters just defied history and stopped a
MAGA wave of extremism at the polls. But there is more work to do to end
the filibuster, codify abortion rights into law, and defend our freedoms,
our families, and our futures. We can accomplish all this and more, but
only if we work together.
