(LANSING, MICH) September is National Preparedness Month, and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding Michiganders of the importance of having a plan to pay insurance policy deductibles in the event of an emergency to ensure they can take advantage of their insurance coverage. ?Having homeowners or renters insurance in place is critically important in the event of a disaster, but most policies require the insured to first pay the policy?s deductible before accessing coverage,? said DIFS Director Anita Fox. ?National Preparedness Month is an important reminder to review your insurance coverage and make sure you have a dedicated emergency fund or other plan to pay your deductible, so you are prepared when disaster strikes.? A deductible is a certain amount of money that must be paid out-of-pocket before the insurance company will pay a claim after a loss. For example, a homeowners policy may have a $1,000 deductible, meaning that you must pay $1,000 of a covered loss before the insurance company will pay. Choosing a higher deductible may lower your premium, it also comes with higher out-of-pocket costs in the event of a loss. If you are unsure of your policy?s deductible, review your policy documents or talk to your insurance agent or company about your current deductible and what deductible is best for your needs and budget.
