Hey comrades!
September is shaping up to be quite an exciting month for our chapter. This weekend, we completed our rigorous endorsement process with a memberwide vote and have now formally endorsed Mandie Landry for House Representative for District 91 and Lauren Jewitt for the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education District 1. You can read more about these candidates on our (and their) social media as well as watch/read their Q&As linked on their names above.
This month, there's also the first Comms Working Group meeting, a voter registration drive, the kickoff meeting of the Poli Ed Working Group's Fall reading series, a Brake Light Clinic, and plenty of other projects in the works. Read on for more info and stay up to date via our social media and Slack!
THURSDAY! September 7th at 7pm | Make Entergy Pay Campaign Meeting
Join us to plan taking back control over our power! Join us on Zoom here and learn more about the campaign at the Make Entergy Pay website.
Also THURSDAY! September 7th at 7pm | Political Education Working Group Meeting
On
the first Thursday every month, we will discuss various pieces selected
by the participating comrades. This Thursday, Sept. 7, we'll be talking
about an excellent short article (1970) by British Marxist Ralph Miliband on another classic, Lenin's The State and Revolution (1917). Join us at Parish Hall (2533 Columbus St) or over Zoom here!
SATURDAY! Sept 9th @ 12pm | Voter Registration Canvass
Join members of New Orleans DSA in District C (Westbank) as we canvass neighborhoods and register voters ahead of the October 14th election. Cold water, snacks, and DSA swag will be provided! We’ll meet at the Hubbell Library (725 Pelican Ave) for a brief training before hitting doors. Sign up here to join us!
SUNDAY! Sept 10th @ 4pm | Communications Working Group Meeting
To build a mass movement, we have to get our name out there, spread our message, and show our strength. That's where our comms working group comes in. Interested in social media management, graphic design, writing, community outreach, press, social marketing, or anything else comms related? Join us on Zoom here!
Also SUNDAY! Sept 10th @ 5:30pm | Local Council Meeting
Monthly meeting of the Local Council, our chapter's elected leadership body. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. If you have questions, or want to submit agenda items for consideration by the Local Council, please email [email protected]. Join via Zoom here.
Also also SUNDAY! Sept 10th @ 6pm | Emma Goldman Gathering @ Holy Ground
Come talk politics with us at the Holy Ground Irish Pub and test out how well you believe the things that you think you believe. Reading books is all well and good, but you have to practice pulling it out of your head and putting it into your own words. Beer can sometimes help that process.
Saturday, Sept 16th @ 11am-2pm: Brake Light Clinic and Health Fair
Join us in offering free brake light changes, health resources, hot food, cool beverages, and great conversations at A.L. Davis Park! We're always looking for volunteers -- if you're interested in getting involved, fill out this form, reach out in the brake light clinic Slack channel or on social media, or just show up day of.
Thursday, Sept 21st @ 7pm: Poli Ed Working Group Meeting
The Poli Ed Working Group is starting a new series of readings for this Fall/Winter and will be meeting on the 3rd Thursday of each month. We kick off on Sept. 21 with a socialist classic that you may have read, but one that's definitely worth re-reading: Marx and Engles' The Communist Manifesto (1848). That session will also talk about the short article "Ur-Fascism" by Umberto Eco.
Saturday, Sept 23rd @ 12pm: Monthly General Meeting
Join our monthly chapter-wide meeting, where we’ll hear updates on organizing efforts, and take up formal business and make collective decisions about the political work we are doing. These meetings are open to all. Join us at Nora Navra Library or online here! Aren’t a member? You can sign up to join us here!
AID FOR MAUI -- Wildfire Relief Funds
The island of Maui has been decimated by the deadliest wildfire in the US in more than a century, with the historic and sacred town of Lahaina reduced to ruins, plunging many thousands of people into homelessness and leaching toxins into the Hawaiian environment. The official death toll lies at 115 as of September 2nd and community organizations estimate over 1,000 individuals remain missing. So far, 6,000 residents have registered for federal assistance, but most recovery work is being done by community organizations.
The Hawai'i Community Foundation is organizing a Maui Strong Fund which is providing resources to a variety of organizations focused on rapid response and recovery. You can read more and donate here. You can also donate directly to Hawaiian union members here. New Orleans DSA stands in solidarity with the people of Hawai'i in this devastating and traumatizing time and in their fight against climate gentrification.

SOUTHERN SOLIDARITY IN NEW ORLEANS - Call for Volunteers and Donations
Our comrades with Southern Solidarity would greatly appreciate donations and more volunteers to support their work this Summer! Southern Solidarity is a grassroots, community-based group of volunteers in solidarity with the unhoused in their quest toward liberation. They organize the delivery of food, medical resources and basic needs directly to the unhoused in the downtown area of New Orleans because our government has not filled this need. Donate to help them get more supplies to distribute. Reach out to volunteer for food prep and delivery.
We hope to see you soon!
Love and Solidarity,
DSA New Orleans Local Council
