Senator JD Vance’s August was a busy one! See all what the Hillbilly on the
Hillhas been up to across Ohio and in Washington. Thanks!

‘HE’S A SENATOR WHO WILL PUT OHIO FIRST – SOMETHING HIS OPPONENTS QUESTIONED
THROUGHOUT THE 2022 CAMPAIGN’ (The Cincinnati Enquirer
<[link removed]>
)-- Eight months into his first term, the freshman Republican senator is
reaching across the aisle to get things done. But he's still not afraid to make
people mad.
That’s the Vance Ohio voters came to know on the campaign trail, the one at
the core of his first months as a senator: Someone unafraid to wade into the
muck and speak his mind, even if it grates his critics or members of his own
party.
At the same time, he’s made strange bedfellows with colleagues across the
aisle to tackle manufacturing issues and crack down on bank executives. Vance
doesn’t idealize bipartisanship, and that's not really his goal. The Iraq War,
he likes to point out, was bipartisan and considered by many to be a massive
failure.
But the junior senator and "Hillbilly Elegy" author is interested in getting
things done.

‘CONFOUNDING EXPECTATIONS IS TURNING INTO SOMETHING OF A HABIT FOR VANCE’ (
Washington Examiner
<[link removed]>) -- Eight
months after winning Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat over Democrat Tim Ryan and a year
after winning one of the wildest, smash-mouth primary races in the Buckeye
State’s history, with both races having former President Donald Trump’s hands
all over them, Vance is not the fire-breather the press predicted he would be.
Neither, of course, is he his mild and wonkish predecessor, former Sen. Rob
Portman.
Vance is just fine not fitting in any of those molds…
Vance is still a conservative populist, still a hardcore Trump supporter. But
he has also introduced legislation with Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Tammy
Baldwin (D-WI), and Mark Kelly (D-AZ).
Vance smiles at the notion of not fitting into someone else’s caricature of
him.

‘NOT ONLY HAS JOE BIDEN REFUSED TO VISIT EAST PALESTINE, BUT HE HAS ALSO
REFUSED TO GRANT CRITICAL ASSISTANCE TO THE RECOVERY EFFORT’ (The Columbus
Dispatch
<[link removed]>
) -- Senator Vance penned an Op-ed calling on the Biden Administration to
provide help to the residents of East Palestine.

‘THE PATHS OF DEALMAKER AND CULTURE WARRIOR SO FAR HAVE BEEN MORE OF AN
INTERSECTION THAN A CROSSROADS FOR VANCE’ (Cleveland.com
<[link removed]>
) -- On the campaign trail, Vance fashioned himself as the sort of conservative
fighter that supporters of former President Donald Trump had come to embrace as
the new face of the Republican Party. That brand of politics would seem to put
Vance at odds with his colleagues across the aisle…
[But] Vance has kicked off his Senate career by reaching across the aisle to
work with Democrats on several bills. He teamed up with a bipartisan group
including Cleveland’s Sherrod Brown on a bill aimed at improving rail safety in
the wake of a catastrophic derailment in East Palestine. He joined a group led
by Massachusetts’ Elizabeth Warren on legislation that would claw back the
salaries of rogue financial institution executives in the wake of high profile
bank collapses at Silicon Valley and Signature banks.
At the same time, he’s embraced divisive culture war issues and been a vocal
backer of Trump’s bid to return to office. Vance calls criminal indictments of
Trump “a complete sham,” and maintains President Joe Biden is using the
Department of Justice to “go after his political rivals.” Vance put a hold on
Senate approval of all Justice Department nominees to protest what he calls
Trump’s “unprecedented political prosecution” as well as the nation’s
“two-tiered justice system.”

‘OHIO IS LEADING THE WAY TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE BY TAPPING THE UTICA SHALE, AND
I WILL NOT STOP FIGHTING FOR OUR ENERGY INDUSTRY TO RECEIVE THE INFRASTRUCTURE
IT NEEDS TO FUEL OUR ECONOMY’(The Marietta Times
<[link removed]>
) -- Senator Vance penned an Op-ed in support of Ohio tapping the Utica Shale.
“In a time of grinding inflation, increasing energy costs and continuing
global instability, we Ohioans are lucky to live on top of the Utica Shale oil
and gas basin.
“Stretching across Appalachian Ohio and into our neighboring states, the Utica
Shale is a vast, underground reserve of energy containing an estimated 38
trillion cubic feet of natural gas, 940 million barrels of oil and 208 million
barrels of natural gas liquids.”

‘THE MEN AND WOMEN TASKED WITH MAINTAINING FEDERAL DATABASES OR MANAGING OUR
SATELLITES SHOULD BE CITIZENS OR PERMANENT RESIDENTS WITH SOME STAKE IN THE
FUTURE OF OUR NATION’ (Breitbart
<[link removed]>
) -- Sen. J.D. Vance is pressing the Department of Justice (DOJ) for
information regarding its lawsuit against SpaceX — which claims Elon Musk’s
rocket company “failed to fairly consider or hire asylees and refugees” —
probing Attorney General Merrick Garland on whether the action is politically
motivated.

IRS for remaining dysfunctional despite $80B in new funding and 87,000 new

‘IT WOULD BE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE TO ALLOW A FOREIGN COMPANY TO BUY US STEEL’ (
Fox Business
<[link removed]>
) -- Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance is calling on a storied American steel
company to reject foreign entity buyout offers to protect their shareholders
and the country.
Vance sent a letter to U.S. Steel CEO David Burritt and board Chairman David
Sutherland expressing his "interest in the formal review of strategic
alternatives" of the steel giant's buyout prospects.
"The recent announcement signaled a turning point not only for the iconic
American company but for an industry of strategic national importance," Vance
wrote.

‘IT WOULD GREATLY BENEFIT OHIOANS AND ALL AMERICANS IF OUR GOVERNMENT COULD BE
COUNTED ON TO DEFEND OUR FOUNDING FATHERS, INSTEAD OF CAPITULATING TO
POLITICALLY MOTIVATED RENAMING EFFORTS’ (WKBN
<[link removed]>
) -- The USDA Forest Service wants to change the name of Wayne National Forest
in southeastern Ohio.
Senator JD Vance, R-Ohio, sent a letter to Tom Vilsack, Secretary of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, and Randy Moore, Chief of the U.S. Forest Service,
opposing the name change.
Vance said the name change “denigrates Ohio history and represents a lack of
fidelity to our nation’s founding generation.”

‘TO MY SURPRISE, NONE OF THE SCHOOLS THAT RECEIEVED MY LETTER RESPONDED IN
GOOD FAITH’ (Townhall
<[link removed]>
) -- In case any colleges and universities were looking to violate the U.S.
Supreme Court's rulings from June that ended affirmative action, Sen. JD Vance
(R-OH) not long after sent a letter to multiple elite schools putting them on
notice. Vance has now sent another one assuring compliance, this time to the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
"To my surprise, none of the schools that received my letter on July 6
responded to these queries in good faith. Instead, each school responded with
generalized and dismissive statements. Reading through the responsive letters,
I was struck by their uncanny similarity, both in substance and structure," he
wrote with original emphasis, with may suggest collusion already occurring.
