Most of us know there’s no such thing as a linear career path anymore. We’ve ditched the career ladder metaphor in favor of a jungle gym. But how do you navigate falling off the monkey bars, so to speak?
Alumni of Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Media discussed how to handle the unexpected in your media career during a recent LinkedIn audio event.
“There is a community of folks that you can connect with and reach out to and talk to, that has really helped me be resilient,” said Zainab Shah, director of engagement and audience at The City and a 2023 Poynter alum. “Because journalism is an endurance sport on some level.”

Join a cohort of more than 550 leaders in news and media who have transformed their careers — and created a ripple effect in the journalism industry — through this competitive Poynter program. It is designed for those who directly manage people and are within their first five years of formal leadership experience.
We will host three leadership academies at Poynter in 2024, each open to 30 participants: March 18-22; May 20-24; and Sept. 23-27. Each academy is unique, with different instructors, new workshops and a diverse mix of participants from all over the world. Key lessons could include how to beat back imposter syndrome, tackle difficult conversations, delegate with purpose and navigate ethical issues.
Our program welcomes all women, including cis and trans women, as well as nonbinary and gender nonconforming journalists who are comfortable in a space that centers the experiences of women in media. Apply before Friday, Sept. 8, 2023.

The secret to success isn’t getting to the biggest newsroom; it’s creating the career you want where you are.
This weekly interactive program will provide reporters with the most relevant and practical skills needed to boost their reporting expertise and drive their professional development. Master-class level instruction on key concepts includes reporting and writing, investigations, trauma-informed interviewing, fact-checking and self-editing.

| Power of Diverse Voices: Writing Workshop for Journalists of Color (2023) |
In person, Nov. 15-18, St. Petersburg, Florida
This transformative, four-day seminar helps journalists of color find their voices and build skills for writing opinion pieces and personal essays.
With the support of expert instructors and fellow journalists of color, you’ll develop the confidence and skills to share your unique perspective in persuasive writing. You will learn both through instruction as well as intensive coaching in small writing groups. You will focus on fact-based opinion writing — and using social media to spark a conversation — across platforms.
This seminar will take place at Poynter’s campus in St. Petersburg, Florida, and will feature teaching sessions, small group workshops and daily writing time. Apply by Sept. 15.
