We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Dave Boltz! (Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected]).
Congratulations to Dave for identifying the Least Sandpiper (Calidris minutilla). According to All About Birds, this species is the smallest of the small sandpipers, not much bigger than a sparrow. They weigh only 1 oz! And yet, this species can fly nonstop over the ocean for 1,800 to 2,500 miles to get to their wintering grounds in South America. Least Sandpipers hunt for food on slightly drier, higher ground compared to other small sandpipers. Although numerous worldwide, they usually flock in smaller numbers—dozens rather than hundreds or thousands.
