Hi John,
I’ve been thinking a lot about how entertainment workers who are caregivers or care recipients must be struggling right now. Contrary to popular belief, most entertainment workers don’t actually benefit from box office sales.
Not only are these writers and actors fighting to sustain their livelihoods, they're losing wages while juggling the deep care challenges we all face in this country. By our calculations, 600,000 entertainment workers are caregivers.

It’s not easy being a caregiver or care recipient today.
A staggering 78% of family caregivers report significant out-of-pocket expenses. This financial strain is even harder for Black and Latine caregivers, who often feel financial stressors much more than others.
Then — when we add in unclear income prospects like what Hollywood workers are experiencing— caregivers and care recipients can quickly exhaust savings and increase their debt. This forces them to make impossible choices like cutting back on medications, delaying appointments, or reducing help from care workers.
The Hollywood strikes’ are yet another example of working people in our country rising up and getting loud about what it really means to make a living while we care for ourselves and our families. 323,000 workers – including baristas, brewery workers, hotel housekeepers, lawyers, and locomotive plant workers – have already gone on strike in 2023!

No matter where caregivers are in the country or what field they work in, we all need solutions that make giving and receiving care easier for us all.
When we support each other, the care movement grows and our demand for a more caring world get louder and more impactful.
With care,
