Mary Robinson MP continues the fight to protect whilstleblowers after Letby case

Dear john,

I hope this message finds you well. As your representative in Parliament, today and this evening, I spoke about the need to strengthen our whistleblowing legislation in the wake of the shocking murders by Lucy Letby. Whistleblowers are integral to transparency and accountability of all our institutions. They shine a light on malpractices, but all too often, they face repercussions due to inadequate legal safeguards.

I am proud to announce that, along with championing stronger protections, I've also urged the Secretary of State to improve our laws so people who speak out will know they will be listened to.  Effective Freedom to Speak up Guardians must ensure that every whistleblower is not only heard but feels safe in coming forward. The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Whistleblowing, that I chair and play an active role, is working diligently to incorporate these suggestions and draft robust legislation that will serve the interests of truth-tellers without them fearing reprisals.

Whistleblowers are the unsung heroes of accountability and transparency in government, the public sector and industry. They have the courage to expose wrongdoing, corruption, and unethical practices that often go unnoticed. It is imperative that we recognise the immense contribution of whistleblowers in safeguarding our society's integrity and well-being. Their actions are not without risk, and it is our duty as parliamentarians to ensure they are adequately protected, supported, and celebrated. The APPG on Whistleblowing has been at the forefront of this effort, tirelessly advocating for stronger legal protections, improved reporting mechanisms, and raising awareness about the significance of whistleblowing in upholding the public interest.

Your support is invaluable. Stay informed and engaged, and together we can establish a system where every voice is acknowledged, and justice is uncompromised.

Yours sincerely,

Mary Robinson MP
