On the first Labor Day, back in 1882, few protections for workers existed and their voices were often drowned out, but generations of workers organized and fought for fair wages and workplace protections. Their blood and sweat helped build the middle class.
These were men like my grandfather who, even at age 11, knew that working in the coal mines was a dark and dangerous way to make a living, but he took on the work as a young boy anyway to help his family make ends meet.
Even today, that work is far from over. Far too many of our neighbors and workers still lack even basic benefits like paid sick leave and family leave. Here in Pennsylvania and across the country, workers are still fighting for a liveable wage, decent benefits, and safe working conditions.
I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in recent years, especially the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, relief for millions of families, and the creation of millions of jobs. There is still more to do to deliver results for Pennsylvania workers and their families.
That’s why I’ll keep fighting in Congress to protect our unions and end the taxpayer subsidization of anti-union activity. For too long the deck in Washington has been stacked against workers.
This Labor Day, I hope I can count on you to fight alongside me and all those working every day to provide for their families and build a better life. We must show support for workers now more than ever.
