John,
I was in South Carolina last night providing live coverage on the latest Democratic debate for ABC News, and let me tell you, that debate was… a real mess.
Once again, we witnessed candidates -- especially those in the billionaire class -- attempt to attack Bernie Sanders and the progressive policies he and Elizabeth Warren support, trying to falsely paint them as too extreme and too expensive.
But as the polls and the first presidential primaries and caucuses show, their attacks are failing. Bernie is currently the frontrunner in the race to become the Democratic nominee to take on Trump in November. He’s even close in the polls with Biden in South Carolina, a state Biden has put most of his resources into, hoping to easily win. Elizabeth also continues to be a strong fighter in these debates and is surging in second place in some national polls.
We know the truth: our New American Majority of people of color and white progressives want a bold, progressive leader who will finally change the broken systems that have plagued us for so long and continue to hold us back, and we won’t be bought by some billionaire who thinks they can buy this election.
But we can’t let up, not for one second. Billionaire Michael Bloomberg is pouring millions of dollars into his campaign, flooding the airwaves and internet with misleading ads to sway voters. Tom Steyer, Pete Buttigieg, and others continue to attack our progressive movement too.
That’s why it’s up to us to keep up the grassroots energy for Bernie, Elizabeth, and our shared progressive values, no matter what comes our way.
DFA is directly working to keep up the fight for a progressive president, whether through our Progressives Unite 2020 project or our ‘Billionaires Can’t Buy Me’ campaign, and we’re just getting started. Will you pitch in $10 or more to fuel our work to send a progressive to the White House this year?
