** Happy Labor Day!
------------------------------------------------------------

Friends -

As we gather with family and friends this Labor Day, it’s important for us to pause and reflect on the significance of this holiday.

Labor Day is not just along weekend marking the end of summer; it's a tribute to the tireless organizing, resilience, and dedication of workers who have shaped the very fabric of our nation.

From the women and men who build the housing our state desperately needs, to the home health care workers who take care of our most vulnerable, and every worker in between, we must extend our deepest gratitude to the absolutely essential role workers play in our communities.

This day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the battles fought for workers' rights, safety, and respect.

Today, let's celebrate not just the achievements, but also the spirit of hard work, determination, and unity that Labor Day embodies.

Wishing you all a meaningful and restful Labor Day!

Sincerely,

Christopher Cabaldon

Candidate for StateSenate District 3

** Sacramento Stonewall Democrats Endorse!
------------------------------------------------------------

I am excited to announce that the Sacramento Stonewall Democrats have endorsed my candidacy!

I am incredibly honored to have the endorsement of Sacramento Stonewall Democrats, an organization I have been proud to be a member of, and work closely with for decades.

Even here in the 3rd District, some school board meetings have turned into polarized, dangerous battleground where the basic civil rights of students and teachers are under siege. A local library has had to confront repeated bomb threats.

Amid escalating attacks on the very existence of the LGBTQ+ community, it is more important than ever that our state leaders intimately understand the struggle that too many in our community are facing. I know it all too well—I’ve lived it. In the State Senate, my commitment to inclusivity and justice will be unwavering.

I’ve led from the front lines as the inaugural chair of the national LGBTQ Mayor’s Alliance and head of the LGBTQ+ caucus of the League of California Cities. Not just with speeches and statements, but getting real results on policy issues from marriage equality and inclusive nondiscrimination laws to HIV/AIDS and hate crimes. I even stared down Betsy DeVos, leading the effort byAmerica’s mayors to defuse her plan to unwind basic protections for transgender kids put in place by President Obama. A column on gay marriage ([link removed]) I wrote for USA Today with Julian Castro and Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was cited as evidence in cases before the US Supreme Court of changing social norms, helping cement marriage equality in US jurisprudence.

You know from that historic movement that the most important thing we can do to protect these rights is for LGBTQ+ people to be visible and at the table. As the longest-serving mayor in West Sacramento's history and the city’s first LGBTQ+ mayor, I helped blaze a trail for LGBTQ+ public officials at a time when many were still struggling to publicly embrace who they were. My journey out of the closet was the subject of an episode of Logo network’s internationally syndicated Coming Out Stories. I’m committed to ensuring that everyone can tell their own stories, and that policymakers and the public can hear them—in our communities and in the State Capitol.

That’s why I’m proud of this Stonewall endorsement, as the Democratic club joins both the California LGBTQ Legislative Caucus and the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund in making this campaign a priority.

** My Testimony at Senate Agriculture Committee on Flannery Associates
------------------------------------------------------------

Last week, I was invited to provide expert testimony to the California Senate Agriculture Committee about the purchase of tens of thousands of acres of land in Solano County by a mysterious group whose identities and intentions had been previously shrouded in secrecy.

As you know, I had written a guest commentary in CalMatters ([link removed]) , the San Jose Mercury News, and the East Bay Times, outlining the risks involved in the stealth acquisitions and calling for the shadowy group to come clean. Two weeks later, they did just that.

And thanks to the recent investigative reporting by the New York Times, we now know that the group, called Flannery Associates, is comprised of several Silicon Valley billionaires seeking to build a new city on agricultural land in Solano County and radically transform Solano County.

Given my background as Mayor, a commissioner for the ship channel and islands in Flannery’s footprint, a state water regulator for our region, and a member of the Delta Protection Commission for 20 years, I am intimately familiar with the laws and regulations protecting water rights, agricultural land, and land use –especially in Solano County. And I know the risks to our energy, water, food, and military security posed by a shadowy corporate effort to acquire 20,000 acres in these sensitive areas. That is why the Committee requested that I outline shortcomings in state laws that have led to this situation and how we can craft policies to prevent these types of land grabs, ensure transparency and protect the public interest.

Protecting California's family farms and water supply is essential to securing California's future. I am already laser focused on these goals and will continue fighting for the public interest when I am elected to the State Senate.

You can watch my full comments during the hearing here. ([link removed])

** Launching a New Career Pathways Initiative!
------------------------------------------------------------

Governor Newsom came to my city this week to sign a new executive order ([link removed]) to improve opportunities for California high school students to build real-life skills and on-the-job experience toward good-paying, fulfilling careers.

Why my city? We were the first in California to guarantee a paid internship to every high school senior in a college and career pathway. We were one of the nation’s first seven “Cities of Learning”, too, developing innovative digital badges that give young people a validated credential of an out-of-school learning experience (like a Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts badge…but portable and shareable on the Internet). This is part of the nationally-recognized West Sacramento Home Run, which also includes connects every child to high-quality preschool, opens a college savings account with a public starter investment for every kindergartener, and promises free community college tuition to every high school student.

We walked the talk at City Hall ([link removed]) , hiring students into paid internships and issuing digital badges for the skills they develop. And our schools offer pathways that lead to jobs in robotics, agriscience, biomedical science, culinary arts, design and media arts, engineering, performing arts, and construction, either directly into industry or into college certificate or degree programs. Some might even go on to Solano Community College’s renowned biomanufacturing program.

This used to be impossible. We used to think that college and career were separate tracks. In high school, you would either pick career or vocational classes, or fill your schedule with classes required for a public university. Teachers started creating classes like “Spanish for Health Care Professions” or “Residential Construction Mathematics”, but the University of California and California State University would not allow these classes to satisfy admission requirements. So I teamed up with then-Senator Darrell Steinberg to write legislation to fix it—and we got it done. As a result, today more than 15,000 career/vocational classes now qualify for UC and CSU admission. Young people can get relevant, tangible classes that give them real skills while bringing rigorous academics to life. And they no longer have to decide in eighth grade whether they’re going to college or getting a job…they can graduate with all their choices still ahead of them.

I served as statewide president of the Linked Learning Alliance for six years, bringing together educators, business, civil rights leaders, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders to bring this approach to hundreds of thousands of California students.

In 2013, I worked with then-Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg to organize an unprecedented policy retreat on Linked Learning with the entireState Senate in a classroom ([link removed]) . ([link removed]) I’ve also moderated a panel in theU.S. Senate’s CTE Caucus Session ([link removed]) oncareer pathways and was invited by the Federal Reserve to give a talk on Workforce Development: From Ideas to Action. As the 3rd District’s representative in the State Senate, I’ll be ready to get right to work, working with the Governor to make these opportunities available to all students.

As First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom said here in West Sacramento this week, “All Californians deserve a path to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. By expanding opportunities to garner tangible skills and on-the-job experience critical for employment, we’re empowering students and workers to succeed in whatever career they choose.”
