Happy Labor Day.
Today, we honor the dignity of the American worker. We remember that America wasn’t built by Wall Street. It was built by the middle class, and unions built the middle class.
Over the last few years, I’ve had the honor of meeting with workers around the country. I’ve visited longshore workers in California, firefighters in Colorado, transit workers in New Jersey, welders in Wisconsin, and teachers in Virginia, among many others.
Whenever I meet members of America’s labor community, I am reminded of what unions have fought for for decades. The eight-hour day, the weekend, safety standards in the workplace, sick days -- those are victories won by labor. And when unions win, workers across the board win. Our communities win. Families win. Our country wins.
That’s why I’ve said from the start that I would be the most pro-worker and pro-union president in American history. I hope I’ve kept that promise.
When I took office, I put more money in the pockets of hardworking Americans with the American Rescue Plan, offering families much-needed breathing room. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, Kamala and I have enacted a bold, long-term economic agenda that has helped create 13 million jobs, while making historic investments in our economy and in our country’s workers.
This is just the beginning. I’m committed to doing everything I can to give workers more power and raise wages. That includes ensuring that good-paying jobs are accessible to everyone, and that all workers have good wages, benefits, and treatment in the workplace.
That’s because the middle class -- and the unions that built it -- are our country’s heart and soul. I’m not done fighting to build an economy that works for working families. And I know you’re not, either.
Thank you for everything, and happy Labor Day.
