Happy Labor Day, John!
Please join me in taking a moment today to honor the workers who keep Vermont running day in and day out, and the labor movement that has shaped our great nation into what it is today.
Organized labor and unions built America’s middle class – and I know this firsthand. When I was in graduate school, I joined the GEO UAW Local 2322, a unit of teaching assistants, associates, and project assistants at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Then, as a teacher, I was a member of the National Education Association, which gave us the collective power to negotiate for health insurance, retirement, paid sick leave, and fair pay.
If it weren’t for the labor movement, many of the things we take for granted in our work life today would not exist. From the minimum wage to workplace safety requirements to reasonable hours, the labor movement drastically improved the quality of life for the working poor in this country. That’s why I have always supported the work of labor organizers as they strive for a better system that works for all.
As income inequality, corporate greed, and anti-labor Republicans continue to threaten the livelihoods of working families, we must come together to strengthen the middle class and protect the right to organize – and that’s exactly what I’m fighting for in Congress.
Happy Labor Day!
