Friends,

This weekend, our country saw two horrific mass shootings within 24 hours of each other.

My heart goes out to all those in El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio, and across the country who are feeling scared, angry, and helpless right now. We cannot accept these deaths as normal, nor can we accept any notion that we are powerless to stop them.

Concert venues, schools, parks, nightclubs, places of worship, retail stores, even people's own homes -- the list goes on and on. These are all places where we should feel safe, but don't, because no place will feel truly safe until our country takes real steps to ensure guns are safely and responsibly owned.

One of my first actions as a member of Congress was to co-sponsor and help pass the most sweeping piece of gun reform legislation in a decade. I also supported, wrote letters, and helped pass legislation to allow gun violence to be studied as the public health crisis it so clearly is and to support Extreme Risk Protection Orders, or "red flag laws." But these bills, along with many other important pieces of legislation, have been stuck on Mitch McConnell's desk, waiting to go to the Senate floor for a vote.

As a doctor, scientist, mother, and congresswoman, it's obvious to me that we must tackle this issue by passing legislation on background checks, closing gun show loopholes, and studying gun violence as an epidemic in our country. But that alone isn't enough -- we must work together to end the hateful rhetoric, the culture of violence, and the lack of opportunity that also contributes to the United States being the only country where gun violence is a near-daily occurrence.

I will do my part in Congress to pass legislation that makes us all safer, and to help restore our national conscience by fighting back against the hatred and nationalistic tendencies that are terrorizing our communities. I won't stop until we get real gun reform and end the dangerous rhetoric that fuels violence, and I hope you will join me in this fight. Together, we can stand up to gun violence and make our communities safer.

Thank you,

Dr. Kim Schrier

P.S. If you can, please make a contribution to Everytown for Gun Safety to help end the gun violence epidemic facing our country right now.
