Happy Labor Day weekend! I’m Helen, a volunteer for the VanValkenburg campaign. I work in email marketing and I am proud to put my skills to use creating fundraising emails for Schuyler - an amazing candidate who is fighting for so much that I believe in. Today, I feel privileged to share my “why I volunteer” story with you. 

The day Roe was overturned, I was completely overwhelmed by emotions - rage, fear and despair, but also regret. Regret that I hadn’t worked harder to keep this from happening, that I had been complacent instead of getting involved sooner. I wanted to attend a rally that night, but I’d promised my kids a baseball game. So I wore my protest shirt to the game.

The next day, I volunteered to help Democratic candidates with their email programs.

Earlier this year, I was thrilled to be matched with Schuyler’s campaign, because the stakes are so high with Virginia as the last state in the south that hasn’t restricted abortion access. He is going up against an incumbent who is so clearly not in line with the values of Henrico County, but who is well funded by the national GOP political machine and dubious PACs. 

Working on this campaign has been so fulfilling and my husband is happy because I’m happy - plus, he likes to call me a “VanValkenburger”!
