Friends,

Bill Richardson, New Mexico’s former governor and a longtime friend of mine, passed away yesterday.

Back in 2006, Bill appointed me as Natural Resources Trustee for the state of New Mexico, and we worked together to preserve our state’s land and water resources. His appointment helped put me on the path I am on today, and for that I will always be grateful.

Bill always believed in the potential of the Land of Enchantment. He never accepted mediocrity, and he pushed us to always see the best version of ourselves as a state and as a people. His time leading New Mexico was one of our state’s finest hours.

Just days ago, Bill was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. After leaving electoral politics, he dedicated the rest of his career to the safe return of political prisoners and hostages around the world. I am enormously grateful for his service and was proud to be one of the four U.S. Senators who advocated for his nomination.

Bill’s legacy will live on in New Mexico and in the many lives he transformed for the better. Julie’s and my sympathies are with Bill’s wife, Barbara, his family, and all who knew him.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to remember Bill with me.

— Martin
