The daily news cycle can feel heavy. Extremists are attacking our rights, the climate crisis is destroying whole communities, a former president was just indicted for the fourth time…and so on. It can feel like there’s never a break.
So today, we want to take a moment to share some GOOD news with you from FiveThirtyEight:
*Since this article was published, there are now 29 states that have made it easier to vote.
|
You may be familiar with where extremists restricted the freedom to vote this year — in states like Ohio, Mississippi, Florida, and Georgia. These are blatant attacks on our democracy, and we, along with our partners, are continuing to fight back against these voter suppression attempts when they emerge.
But we also want to talk about where legislators have made it EASIER for voters to make their voices heard:
- New Mexico passed a major voting rights package to automatically register voters who interact with the state’s Motor Vehicle Division, to restore the right to vote for formerly incarcerated people, and to allow voters to request absentee ballots for all future elections without needing to reapply.
- Michigan enacted eight laws to expand voting rights — including guaranteeing at least nine days, and up to 29 days, of in-person early voting; allowing voters to fix mistakes on their absentee ballot envelopes and track absentee ballots online; and accepting student, military, or tribal IDs at polling places.
- Connecticut made history as the sixth state to pass a state-level voting rights act — barring municipalities from discriminating against marginalized groups in the voting process, ensuring a minimum of 14 days of early voting, adding a constitutional amendment to the 2024 ballot which could legalize no-excuse absentee voting, and more.
Fortunately, that’s just a handful of the dozens of pro-voter laws that have been enacted this year. We’re fighting to ensure that there are even more voting rights victories in 2023 and beyond — and we’re grateful for every Fair Fight Action supporter who helps to make it all possible.
Thank you!
