Dear John,
Before the referendum, Boris Johnson made a promise to every EU
citizen living in the UK. He said they would automatically be granted
the right to stay indefinitely.
Surprise, surprise, he’s gone back on his word and betrayed
EU citizens. Now they have to wade through red tape to find
out if they’ve been granted settled status in the UK. And if they
don’t get approved by June 2021, they'll be subjected to the
Conservatives’ hostile environment.
Disgraceful.
But the Liberal Democrats won’t stop fighting for EU citizens. We
know they are our colleagues, our friends and our neighbours. We owe
them so much and they have a right to stay here.
That’s why today I presented a Bill in Parliament to hold the
Tories’ feet to the fire. The Bill does two things: automatically
grant EU citizens living in the UK the right to stay, and provide EU
citizens with confirmation of their status on paper, preventing them
from becoming the victims of another Windrush scandal.
We're not going to let Boris Johnson get away with
this. We’re going to pile on the pressure. And we’re not
going to stop until he keeps his promise and automatically extends the
right to stay to all EU citizens.
But I can’t do this without you. Can we count on your
support?
John, your support during our fight against Brexit was
incredible and I'm so, so grateful. But what a post-Brexit
Britain looks like is still up for grabs. The fight for Britain's
future is far from over. We aren't giving up fighting for EU citizens
to have the right to stay in the UK. Are you with
us?
