Last week, I joined nearly 90 of my Democratic colleagues in Congress to send a letter to President Biden urging him to accelerate ongoing efforts to provide relief for those saddled with student debt.
When the Supreme Court blocked President Biden’s initial debt relief plan, it was a setback, but we were encouraged when the Administration announced an alternative plan to deliver relief using the Higher Education Act of 1965.
With interest accruing on student loan debt for the first time in three years, and payments set to restart next month, It’s time now to speed up these efforts to provide critical relief.
I am passionate about student debt cancellation because of what it will mean for each and every borrower. It will help millions of people buy a home, start a business, or save for retirement. For some, it means the ability to put food on the table, cover the rent, or pay for life-saving medication.
The student loan debt crisis is a multigenerational issue of racial, disability, gender, and economic justice. Broad-based student debt cancellation is an investment in our families, communities, and economy. It would provide immediate relief to millions, help narrow the racial wealth gap, and provide a massive stimulus to our economy.
So, I’m going to keep pushing for student loan debt cancellation because of the difference it will make for each borrower. If you’re with me, I hope you will join the nearly 90 members of Congress in urging President Biden to act quickly to deliver relief.
