Slavery wasn’t so bad.
It was better than death.
That’s what PragerU’s cartoonized Christopher Columbus shares in an educational video currently approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis. This and other anti-woke lessons are slated to grace the halls of every public school in Florida.
If you’ve scoffed or rolled your eyes thinking that’s ridiculous, know that this is REALITY. Children in Florida are being, taking from their vocabulary, GROOMED by misogynistic, homophobic and transphobic, white supremacists.
School was my favorite place in the world. I enjoyed every moment of every second in class. I was the nerd who checked out hordes of books each week. I was the child who raised her hand the instant my teacher finished asking their questions or teaching their subject. And I remember being told that slavery IS bad.
Slavery is ALWAYS bad.
Teaching otherwise is a disservice to our history.

The same morning I saw PragerU’s cartoon I told my partner if anything of that ilk trashed our kids’ education, I would homeschool. In a heartbeat. I would quit my job and make my next mission in life to teach my kids the truth. Even if our history has unhealed wounds.
But so many families don’t have resources to homeschool their kids. I know I’m privileged in that it’s an option for us. Not for so many. And that is another layer of anger I have at the Conservative Villains pushing PragerU, banning books from shelves, and eliminating Critical Race Theory in schools.
They have no problem dictating what our kids can and can’t learn. What our kids can or can’t have access to. They have a problem when we argue that our kids are FREE TO LEARN it all. Our kids are FREE TO ACCESS it all. Essentially freedom in education.
It’s funny how often Conservatives use the word FREEDOM to shield and wall themselves from a changing world.

PowerPAC is a social justice organization that strategically directs financial and human resources to local and state organizations working to deliver wins in legislative fights, ballot initiatives, and more. For years the money we've raised has, dollar for dollar, been given back to the communities we work with. We've made sure that your investments were being used to build power for our communities because too often we are underrepresented and ignored.
