Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Thank you to the teachers and school staff, principals and administrators, families and students, and everyone else who helped make this a fantastic first week of school! We kicked off the school year at the modernized Raymond Elementary School, joined President Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at Eliot-Hine Middle School, and celebrated the first day of pre-K at Smothers Elementary School. At every school, I saw joyful educators and excited students. Let's keep that energy going throughout the school year!

This week, in addition to celebrating our students and educators, we also kicked off 202Creates — our annual month-long celebration of DC's creative community. Throughout the month, we will shine a spotlight on the people who keep DC creative and highlight the programs we're using to keep DC a city where artists and makers can live, thrive, and create.

There are many 202Creates events happening across the city throughout September. Today, for example, there are free concerts happening at multiple locations in the Art to Go-Go Anacostia Arts & Culture District. The concerts kicked off at noon and will go throughout the evening; you can find more information HERE.  At the end of the month, we will come together for two DC favorites: Art All Night and the 38th Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards.

Find a full calendar of events on 202creates.com.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
First Day of PreK
