[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

School is starting again, and for parents all across the country, the dread is starting too. Being a young person is hard enough today, between living through a pandemic and having to deal with social media. But the true dread that parents feel is the knowledge that you can send your child to school, and they will end up running for their life.

My heart is with everyone at UNC-Chapel Hill. Another community was shaken to the core on Monday when an armed gunman sent the campus into lockdown and murdered a professor.

Students sheltered in place and watched police sweep their classrooms, sidewalks, and labs. Some students jumped out of windows and ran. Now what? They’re supposed to find a way to live and learn in these places as if things are normal?

It was the very first day for the local school system, and they went into an hours-long lock down. It’s traumatizing, and it’s insane to accept this as some inevitable reality.

You elected us to fix things, and that’s what I intend to do. Universal background checks. Banning assault weapons. We know what it takes to save lives, but it is going to take all of us.

If you can, please make a contribution today to say you’re with me. We’ll put it to work to build a movement with the political power in Washington to change our gun laws and save lives.

Every parent in America knows that a gunman opening fire at school could be their child’s reality.

At every turn, we are reminded that our country has failed to keep kids safe. For too long, we put more value on the profits of the gun industry than kids’ lives.

More and more schools are requiring clear backpacks. There are ads for Kevlar inserts for backpacks aimed directly at parents’ fears. And then there are the endless school shooter drills that are traumatizing on their own.

We shouldn’t have to live through this. Our kids shouldn’t have to practice being locked in a tiny bathroom with 20+ other kids and staying quiet to avoid dying.

For me, back to school is just a reminder of how important my work in the Senate is. I fundamentally believe we can build a safer future for our kids. I wouldn’t do this job or run for reelection if I didn’t believe that.

But I also know that I cannot do it alone. So I am asking you to help me build a movement with the political power and will to beat the gun lobby forever.

Will you please contribute any amount you can to support my efforts to change our gun laws in the U.S. Senate? The only way this works is with a truly people-powered effort.
