So many lives have been taken. So many families have been devastated. So many communities have been traumatized by these avoidable tragedies at the hands of gun violence. And what’s even worse is that Trump and the GOP are refusing to acknowledge the culture of white supremacy they’ve created. Countless mass shooters have held shockingly racist views, no doubt fueled by Trump’s unapologetically hateful and violent rhetoric. They specifically target people of color and immigrants, bragging on right-wing message boards of their “triumph.” Even the suspected domestic terrorist in the El Paso mass shooting posted an anti-immigrant manifesto online before killing at least 20 people this weekend. We don’t even know if there are more victims, because people might be avoiding medical care due to their immigration status. Let’s call this what it is: white nationalist terrorism. Our country should be in crisis mode. We are losing children, parents, family members, teachers, co-workers, friends, and loved ones at the hands of increased gun violence. White nationalists are targeting people of color in deadly attacks. And yet, Donald Trump wants to blame “video games,” “the media,” and “mental illness” for these horrendous attacks while ignoring the need for common sense gun control. His lack of moral compass and self-awareness is shameful. Donald Trump is to blame. Mitch McConnell is to blame. Republicans deep in the pockets of special interests like the NRA are to blame. They all have blood on their hands.
My heart goes out to Gilroy, California and El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio and every other community touched by gun violence. Together, we’re fighting to make it right. Thank you, -Yvette Yvette Simpson, CEO |
