Republicans on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce remain committed to protecting the rights of Americans to govern themselves. As Chairwoman of this Committee, I firmly believe that looking out for the interests of students and workers in our country is truly rewarding work. Since the beginning of this Congress, we have moved at a lightning pace and acted swiftly in addressing a myriad of issues – some of which I’m highlighting today. Previously, you may remember my touching upon the achievements made by the House Republican Conference as well as those made by the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. Indeed, we have been hard at work in serving you.

On education, we have worked diligently to strengthen parents’ rights. Simply put, parents have a God-given right to make decisions for their children. Both in the Committee and in the House, we have passed the Parents Bill of Rights Act, legislation that reaffirms a parent’s right to review course curriculum, meet with the child’s teacher, and be heard at school board meetings without fear of reprisal. Further, we have also passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023 that restores the safety, privacy, and opportunities of women and girls in sports.

We have also made clear progress by passing several pieces of legislation to address pressing issues within the workforce. In addition to two House-passed proposals to bring down health care costs for small businesses, the Committee also advanced four bipartisan bills to address dishonest billing, opaque rules, and shady industry practices that have left patients in the dark, unable to make informed health care decisions, and in the end, paying more for health care. Combined, these bills improve transparency and competition in the U.S. health care system so workers and their families have more options at lower prices. Lastly, since the start of the 118^th Congress, the Committee has sent nearly 100 oversight letters that cover issues from learning loss to gender-transition interventions to Big Labor favoritism.

Our work is far from over – and we have no intention to rest on our laurels. As I always do, I will continue to update you on our work and the meaningful steps we are taking to deliver on your priorities.

Recently, I joined Family Research Council’s Washington Watch to celebrate students heading back to school. In my discussion with former Georgia Congressman Jody Hice, I laid out the case as to why the Parents Bill of Rights Act – as I’ve mentioned above – is sorely needed right now in America. Republicans want to ensure that the public understands we are the champions of education freedom. We should have education freedom for every child, every parent in this country.

A Stellar Opportunity

On Monday, I traveled to Bakersville in Mitchell County to meet with students, staff, and administrators of Bowman Middle School – as well as to view the school’s International Space Station (ISS) contact project. As part of this project, students were able to ask questions in real time via ham radio to Warren Hoburg, a NASA Astronaut who successfully traveled to the ISS on March 3^rd of this year. This impressive event was one that these students will surely remember as they continue their educational journeys. Congratulations to all who made this event, and this learning opportunity, such a success!
