I sat down with NY1 to discuss real solutions to the migrant crisis created by President Biden and exacerbated by Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul. I also spoke about Staten Island’s desire to secede from New York City over our borough paying the highest effective property tax rate while receiving fewer services, and the Mayor's handling of the migrant crisis. WATCH Every year, Congress recognizes students across the United States for achievements in volunteerism, character development and fitness. This year, three students from New York's 11th Congressional District, John Criscuoli, Christopher Dantoni and Anthony Pizzella, received the Gold Medal. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL Fort Wadsworth is a historic gem cherished by the Staten Island community and utilized by our brave U.S. Coast Guard service members and U.S. Park Police for both housing and operations. It also houses a food pantry for service members and veterans who certainly should be prioritized over citizens of other countries. That's why I've introduced legislation to prevent the city and state from moving forward with a plan to house migrants on any land that's under federal control, in addition to calling on the President to secure the border, the Senate to pass our border security bill, and the Mayor to challenge New York City's right to shelter law. READ MORE Our office was pleased to learn that CGM America has acquired Global Container Terminal Bayonne and New York on Staten Island. With the Port Authority’s approval of this deal, this facility will remain integral to Staten Island for years to come, and its scheduled expansion promises to produce thousands more jobs and a much larger economic impact in the region. During our House Ways and Means Committee field hearing on trade at the terminal, I highlighted that we will be seeing this facility’s capacity increase by 65% through 2027 and double by 2030 thanks to private investment and federal infrastructure funding. IN THE NEWS Cruz and Malliotakis demand answers from Pentagon on 9/11 defendants' plea deal Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Monday denouncing the possibility of a plea deal under consideration that could ensure the suspected architect of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and his fellow defendants never face the death penalty. The correspondence from the lawmakers, obtained exclusively by the Washington Examiner, comes after the Pentagon sent a letter earlier this month to the families of 9/11 victims informing them the Office of the Chief Prosecutor “has been negotiating and is considering entering into pre-trial agreements” in which the five men, including suspected mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, would “accept criminal responsibility for their actions and plead guilty … in exchange for not receiving the death penalty.” READ Rep. Malliotakis believes Sea Wall project finally ready to move ahead after years of delays After years of delays, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) believes a vital resiliency project is ready to move forward along the East Shore. Malliotakis has long maintained that design conflicts between the city and federal governments have been a key cause to delays for the massive project officially known as the South Shore of Staten Island Coastal Storm Risk Management Project, but colloquially referred to as the East Shore Sea Wall. But now, Malliotakis said the top official from the city Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala, recently joined those conversations and is helping to move the project forward.
