Know anyone who doesn’t go by their full legal name. Iowa Republicans want to shut that down.

Iowa Governor Reynolds goes by Kim. But that’s not her legal first name. It’s a shorthand that she prefers to Kimberly.

Why are we talking about legal first names?

Because Iowa Republicans want to force children to get their parents' permission to use a nickname or shorthand in school.

Meaning that in school, our governor’s parents would have had to approve her teachers calling her Kim, instead of Kimberly. Regardless of which name she preferred.

Republicans love to talk about being the party of small government. In what world is that even remotely true?!

Republicans are doing this not to help anyone, but rather to further demonize and torment members of the LGBTQ community.

If Kimberly wants to go by Kim, that’s her prerogative. Likewise, if she wants to go by Ken, that too is her choice.

This policy solves no problems. It’s just cruel. Which, as is too often the case when it comes to Iowa Republicans, is the point.

It has to stop.

And while we’re talking about something as simple as nicknames, I’d like to take a moment to talk about what it means to be “political.” I know so many folks who say they’re not political. And I get it - it’s exhausting, and often outright heartbreaking, to follow the news too closely these days.

But if you know anyone who doesn’t go by their full legal name, you can ignore politics. But politics isn’t gonna ignore you.

My democratic colleagues and I fight to make Iowa a more just, equitable and accepting place to be whoever you want to be.

My Republican colleagues want to control who you date, how you treat your body… and even what name you choose to go by.

Kick in $20.24 or more today and together, let’s fight for an Iowa that stands for more personal freedom, not less.

Thank you,
Senator Liz Bennett
