John,

When I was younger, I used to squish into bed with my brothers Daniel and James almost every night. We'd stay up talking and joking around, giggling like crazy until we fell asleep. We loved being together.

Then my life changed forever: Daniel was murdered in his first-grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary.

For years after the shooting, I never wanted to think about gun violence. Every time I heard the word "gun," I wanted to scream – I didn't want to be constantly reminded of what happened to Daniel.

But as I saw more and more families torn apart, I felt like if I didn't get involved, then more people were going to die. So no matter how much it hurts to relive Daniel's murder, I don't have a choice – I have to prevent other families and communities from being shattered in that same way.

That's why I'm helping Sandy Hook Promise lead an all-out push to pass universal background checks. Tomorrow will mark one year since the House passed this lifesaving legislation – and still the Senate has refused to vote on it. We need to raise $125,000 by midnight tomorrow to ramp up pressure on the Senate to finally act. So please, can I count on you to give right now to help protect children like my little brother, Daniel, from gun violence?

Please rush $10, or as much as you're able to give, to Sandy Hook Promise right now to help fund our all-out push to pass universal background checks. We cannot allow our leaders to sit back as kids are slaughtered in our schools and communities every single day.

This work is still extremely difficult for me, and probably always will be. But I do it because I want to honor my little brother. I want to honor the Parkland victims and survivors. I want to honor anyone who has ever felt the pain and devastation caused by gun violence.

When I think about the movement that emerged out of Parkland, the activism across the country and the people like you who care so much about preventing gun violence, I'm filled with so much hope. It's given me the strength to continue this work because I know I'm not alone in the fight.

Thank you for your support today – together, we won't back down. Together, I know we'll build a safer world for all kids.

Natalie Barden (Daniel's sister)
