Citizens for Ethics & Responsibility in Washington

John,

At CREW, we are all about transparency—but we don’t stop there. We also push for accountability when we bring important revelations to light.

That means we file requests for information and publish important investigations, but we also file ethics complaints and lawsuits. Our last few weeks of work showcase that breadth:

The 14th Amendment is top of mind for many people, so we’ll start there. Interest in disqualification has exploded in the last two weeks, with conservative legal scholars releasing a paper laying out their finding that Trump is disqualified, showing that there is an emerging consensus among experts. CREW’s Donald Sherman appeared on Lights On with Jessica Denson to explain our work, and the 14th Amendment was also covered in The Nation, ABC News, Forbes, Las Vegas Sun, The Guardian, and Los Angeles Times

As Donald said in a recent interview, it’s clear that the 14th Amendment was made for this moment—the only question is whether we are up to the challenge of enforcing it. We can tell you right now: we are.

Meanwhile, CREW has doggedly pursued other avenues of accountability for the insurrection, and we continue to track corporate donations to the Sedition Caucus, as ABC News covered this week.

We requested Secret Service records to better understand the agency’s response to January 6th—and as part of that effort, obtained records of its contacts with the Oath Keepers. Our report was covered in outlets including MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Tonight, WIRED, The Daily Beast, Forbes, Jacobin, and New Republic.

We haven’t forgotten about Trump’s financial corruption, either. We published his personal financial disclosure, which got coverage for including millions in income from cryptocurrency. The New York Times also referenced our investigations into the Trump family’s business dealings in an important analysis piece comparing the magnitude of Trump’s foreign income to that of President Biden’s son (who never worked in the White House).

We’ll continue to set the record straight when Eric Trump claims his family never profited from foreign business while his father was president and poke holes in Trump’s flimsy legal defenses, all while we prepare to take on our biggest legal fight yet.

If this work helps give you peace of mind, please make a donation today to help us continue to pursue both transparency AND accountability.
