We stay busy on multiple fronts here at Issue One as we continue our work to fix our broken political system and build an inclusive democracy that works for everyone.
We want to make sure we’re keeping you — the Issue One community — in the loop about all of that work and the progress we’re making. Here’s some of what happened in August:
Protecting Our Elections
Our most recent Faces of Democracy fly-in was mentioned in this Time article. Plus, polling that we commissioned, which demonstrates overwhelming public support for increased federal funding for our nation’s critical election infrastructure, was also cited.
We recently released “Voices,” a video that calls on Congress to invest in our election infrastructure and security.
Both Issue One and our bipartisan National Council on Election Integrity (NCEI) responded following the indictment of former President Donald Trump for his role in the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The NCEI also released a statement in response to the indictment of the former president in the state of Georgia.
Holding Big Tech Accountable
We developed this new website alongside our partners to explain why the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) is an important step to protect the wellbeing of children online.Last month, the Senate Commerce Committee voted unanimously to advance KOSA. A vote before the full Senate is up next so stay tuned about ways to show your support.
In the final episode of The X-Ray’s first season, Council for Responsible Social Media (CRSM) member Kristin Bride talked about her son Carson, who committed suicide after being cyberbullied; the harms posed by social media; and what she's doing to hold platforms accountable. You can listen to the conversation wherever you get your podcasts.
ICYMI: The CRSM recently partnered with Cornell University and the U.S. Institute of Peace to host a tabletop exercise that brought together Congress and leading experts to respond to potential national security threats. The activity demonstrated the profound risks posed by social media and artificial intelligence without clear guardrails.
Issue One is the leading crosspartisan political reform group in Washington. We unite Republicans, Democrats, and independents in the movement to fix our broken political system.
