Dear friend:

Yesterday, I took to Twitter to comment on the ongoing student debt crisis and to highlight the importance of electing officials who stand up for constituents rather than the financial institutions that back their campaigns. đź“šđź’˛
The beginning of this month marks the expiration of pandemic-era financial protections for student loan borrowers. Interest on Federal loans begins accruing on September 1st, and payments will resume for about 44 million Americans in October. The promises made by the Biden administration to borrowers have fallen far short of their mark—$20k in Federal loan forgiveness is now off the table, and the administration has instead focused on providing (slightly) more affordable repayment options. The Supreme Court blocked Biden’s executive order, ruling that an expansive debt cancellation program must be approved by Congress. This is why it’s so incredibly important to make sure we elect representatives who support Student Debt Cancellation. And, looking forward, we also need to elect people who will fight for free Public College in the future. Unfortunately, we can’t always rely on what our reps say and do while they’re campaigning. That’s why it’s important to follow the money. During his campaigns for State Assembly in 2014 & 2016, my opponent received thousands of dollars in donations from lobbying groups associated with for-profit institutions that prey on working-class people hoping to further their education. More recently, during his Congressional campaigns in 2017 and 2020, he received thousands of dollars from Navient, which at the time was one of the largest student loan payment collectors. In fact, Insurance and Financial Institutions are his second-largest category of donors—why would we believe he has any real interest in debt relief for Americans? I believe that Congressional Representatives should be beholden to the citizens they represent, not the giant corporations that bleed money from the economy to enrich shareholders.

I have never taken and will never take a dime from financial institutions—or any corporate donors at all. Today is the August end of month fundraising deadline, and that is why we need 853 more people to sign up to become monthly $34 donors to reach our goal.
