Dear Friend,

As its name implies, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) should be dedicated to protecting consumers from the wide array of abuses that can be found in the financial industry. These abuses include predatory practices, deceptive marketing, and even harassment from debt collectors.

Created during the Obama Administration following the 2008 financial crisis, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has returned $12 billion to 31 million consumers who were victims of fraud.

Under the current Administration, however, the CFPB has shifted its focus away from addressing consumer concerns and safeguarding consumers from unscrupulous financial practices. Now, the CFPB is considering a new Debt Collection Rule that would give debt collectors free reign to harass consumers.

Your voice is needed today to stop abusive, third-party debt collectors.

Do you or someone you know have outstanding medical bills? Under the proposed rule, debt collectors could call you seven times every week for each individual bill!

Do you have capacity or cost limits on electronic communication? The proposed rule allows debt collectors to text, email or instant message you without consent and without clearly defined limits.

Does anyone other than yourself ever answer your phone? The proposed rule violates consumer privacy by allowing messages to be left with whomever answers the phone, even a child.

For all these reasons and more, we need you to take action by signing our statement to protect consumers from harassment from debt collectors. The CFPB is accepting public comment on the Debt Collection Rule through August 19 – thank you for signing on today!
