Closing the youth jobs gap

Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in London are not getting the support they need to succeed in the capital’s thriving jobs market, according to a ground-breaking report, The Employment Gap in London ( www.impetus.org.uk/employment-gap-london ), from London Councils and Impetus.

Cllr Georgia Gould, Deputy Chair of London Councils and Executive member for Skills & Employment, said: ( [link removed] ) “The post-16 skills system is not doing enough to support young Londoners as they make the leap from school to further study or work.

“We must address London’s consistently high NEET rates, low participation in apprenticeships and low qualification levels or risk another generation of young people being left behind."

Our priorities for new Mayor
As London moves towards its sixth Mayoral election on 7 May, London Councils has set out its priorities for the next four years and how it would like to see the partnership between the Mayor and the boroughs strengthened for the benefit of all Londoners.

Cllr Peter John OBE, Chair of London Councils says: ( [link removed] ) “The winner will be the face of London as we enter the third decade in which the city is represented and served by a strategic Mayor, and 32 London boroughs and the City of London Corporation. Two decades of joint working have proven the strength of this form of combined democratic city leadership. We want that partnership to continue and to be strengthened over the next four years.”

A more coordinated approach to car clubs

London Councils is launching a new online resource to support borough collaboration on car clubs policy.

This is the latest stage of London Councils’ development of a pan-London approach to car clubs. There are currently six car clubs in London, estimated to have more than 400,000 members across the capital.

( [link removed] )Cllr Julian Bell, Chair of London Councils’ Transport & Environment Committee, said ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ): “Car clubs can play an important role in changing behaviour. We’re keen to support car clubs where they help to reduce the total number of vehicles on the road and facilitate use of less-polluting vehicles. However, car clubs don’t work everywhere and need to fit into our overall strategy for greener travel options such as walking, cycling, and public transport."
