Over the last year, Florida has led the effort to isolate, censor,
stigmatize and discriminate against public school students. As the new
school year begins, we cannot lose sight of the importance of
providing a quality education to all students that cultivates respect,
inclusivity and diversity. Our Learning for Justice program works to
push back against the states mandating censorship in public schools.

Florida is becoming a model for other states to target the
"woke" ideologies that they claim impede student success.
While other states have not gone as far as Florida, we are beginning
to see trends across the Deep South. From "Don't Say
Gay," to banning the Advanced Placement African American Studies
curriculum, there are many battles to take on.

With many curriculum limitations already set in place, these recent
bans and restrictions are creating a culture of intimidation for
teachers across the country. The intentionally crafted vague language
used in bill provisions often confuses teachers, making it more
difficult to discern which topics can be discussed in the classroom.

Book bans, which have received a lot of attention in the last few
years, continue to make headlines on a national scale. The number of
books challenged for removal increased exponentially to 40 percent in
2022

, further pushing an agenda to censor education and perpetuate hate,
extremism and white supremacy.

Our teachers and students deserve an environment free of fear tactics
used to silence Black and Brown voices and LGBTQ+ youth. Learning for
Justice works with educators to provide educational materials that
combat hate and uplift diversity, equity and inclusion. The future of
public education is at risk, and we cannot afford to fail our students
again.

The LFJ team works diligently to ensure educators have the resources
necessary to be successful in the classroom and beyond. We sustain
collaborations with community members, promote leadership and build
collective power to take action - all free of charge.

But we cannot provide these necessary services without your help.
