John,

Rep. Mary Peltola made history last fall, becoming the first Yup’ik Eskimo woman elected to Congress. She also defied the pundits by defeating Alaska’s MAGA former Governor Sarah Palin to become the first Democrat to hold this House seat in 50 years and the first woman ever! Since day one of being sworn into office, Mary has fought tooth and nail to protect Alaskan families.

In Mary, Alaskans have a thoughtful, dedicated champion for jobs, reproductive rights, sustainable fishing, and working families representing them in Congress.

I’m honored to work closely with Mary, particularly on the House Natural Resources Committee where we have teamed up on a bill to reauthorize our country’s federal marine fisheries law, the Magnuson-Stevens Act (MSA). Our bill will strengthen and modernize this important law. Mary’s experience on these issues and her perspective representing native Alaskan fishing communities brings unique insight to our shared work.

And earlier this year, Mary and I co-introduced the Coastal Seaweed Farm Act of 2023, to support alternative, sustainable agriculture. Under this bill, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) would be required to conduct a joint study evaluating the benefits and impacts of coastal seaweed farming on the marine ecosystem, in order to understand and implement regulations. Importantly, this bill would also create a grant program to reduce cost barriers for indigenous communities, empowering them to participate in and continue benefiting from the coastal seaweed farming industry.

As the climate crisis accelerates, we must not only find ways to mitigate damages, but also support sustainable strategies for communities to adapt and thrive. In these efforts, it is critical to center equity and environmental justice, recognizing the unique role of indigenous communities.

But, John, as thrilled as we are to have Mary Peltola in Congress, we must immediately get to work defending her. In 2024, she’ll face another highly competitive race where MAGA extremists will do whatever it takes to win back this seat. Mary shocked the political establishment and beat them last year. Thanks to Mary, we have a thoughtful pro-choice Democrat in Congress instead of another MAGA extremist. Our next challenge is to make sure Mary has the resources to win next year and stay in Congress fighting for Alaskan families for years to come.

Will you make a split contribution to help Mary hold onto Alaska’s House seat?

Thanks for all you do,

Jared
