Dear John,
Workers fought for Labor Day. This holiday honors the nation's workers and their contributions to the well-being of our country. Like any holiday, we observe Labor Day because we value labor, and understand it as important to our lives and our communities.
Yesterday many members of Maryland's union families came together for a Labor Day mass at Saint Camillus Church in Silver Spring. We were honored to have Governor Wes Moore join us for the service. "We believe in labor and we believe they continue to serve as the backbone of our communities,” Governor Moore told reporters after the mass.

Labor Day this year comes at a time when workers across the country and around the DC and Maryland region are rising up in solidarity for better wages, safer working conditions, and dignity and respect. The Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO and the more than 150 Affiliates we unite are proud to be part of this movement every day.
The Labor Day celebrations are just beginning! Make time this weekend to join our local unions at picnics, cookouts, and other opportunities to come together to celebrate workers and all that labor makes possible.
In solidarity,
Dyana Forester President, Metro Washington Council AFL-CIO

Majority of Americans support labor unions, new poll finds
USA Today — August 29, 2023 How does the public feel about labor unions and hot strike summer? More than two-thirds of Americans support unions, according to a recent poll from The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO). That number is even higher for people younger than 30, 88% percent saying they support labor unions.
Unions are key to reversing stagnant wages and economic inequality, Treasury Department says in first-of-its-kind report Marketwatch – August 29, 2023 Unions benefit the middle class in that they raise members’ wages by 10% to 15%, according to the report, which also said that unions help to improve wages and benefits of nonunion workers, affecting the wellbeing of many families and communities. All of that chips away at inequality, including racial and gender wage gaps, the report said.
