Dear Friend,
Jose Luis Zelaya grew up in Honduras. After Hurricane Mitch, his mother fled to the United States with his sister.
At the age of thirteen. Jose Luis made the hardest decision a teenager could ever make. He left home, alone, in search of his mother.
For over 45 days, he journeyed, on his own until he made it to the U.S. - Mexico border. Once there, he was detained by border patrol and sent to a detention center in Harlingen, Texas.
It took two months for Jose Luis to be reunited with his mother.
His story is one of many. To this day, children continue to arrive on their own. Many are at risk of being deported to danger.
That’s why we need Waymakers now more than ever.
A Waymaker is someone who helps open a path for a child as they find their way in their new home.
From Friday, September 15th through Sunday, October 1st, join us in a virtual 1 Mi or 5K race and #BeAWaymaker for those who walk for their dreams of a life lived safely, with dignity and respect.
