I need to ask you to contribute $3 to my reelection before tonight's fundraising deadline. But before I do, will you give me a chance to explain why this request is so important?

The truth is that being a member of Congress, going to work representing my community and fighting for working people every day is truly one of the joys of my life. It's a privilege and an honor that I have never once taken for granted.

But it can be tough. By far, the worst part of this job is the obscene amount of money that is spent on our elections. It puts a huge pressure on me to make sure we have the resources necessary to run successful campaigns.

That’s why a lot of my colleagues take checks from corporate PACs, Wall Street billionaires, or fossil fuel companies without even thinking twice. They want the super PACs and the limitless spending in their races.

It's easy. But it’s corrupting our democracy and making elected officials more accountable to special interests than the people who elected them.

That’s not how I do things. I believe in grassroots movements. But this means I need to lean on you for support, especially today. So I wish I didn’t have to ask, but I know that winning reelection and making change in Washington requires all of us.

So if you can, will you please make your first contribution to my reelection before tonight’s deadline? This campaign is funded by lots of people giving small amounts at a time, so every dollar makes a difference.

Your support is what allows me to keep my time dialing for dollars to a minimum. It means I don’t have to beg corporate PACs and lobbyists.

Instead, I can dedicate my time to fighting for policies that help working people, supporting my constituents, and organizing to build power for our progressive movement.

Believe me when I say that your support is not something I take for granted. And I never will.
