Dear John,
This month's update features two change-makers, both of whom spoke at our
online World Population Day event in July. Ekaterina Zhelenkova expands on
her presentation, stressing the essential role of education on development
and quality of life, and Joan Kembabazi reports back from the Women Deliver
conference in Rwanda.
Also featured are a story on Earth Overshoot Day, which landed on the 2
August this year, stories from the UK and Africa and our Head of Campaigns
ask the question; _Are only children lonely children? _We also offer a
little teaser in advance of announcing our new Empower to Plan partner next
week!

What's the strongest form of human development?
Education! Having joined our expert panel on World Population Day [3],
Ekaterina Zhelenkova has kindly expanded on her presentation and laid out
why education is the key factor to health, empowerment and equality.

To mark this year’s International Childfree Day on 1 August, we shared
some of our favourite testimonials from Population Matters supporters who
have made the choice to live their lives without having children.

Are only children lonely children?
Family sizes are shrinking across the world but, for a variety of reasons,
having just one child is still often not a popular choice. In fact, in a
poll we conducted in 2021, just 7% of respondents said it was their ideal
family size. Our Head of Campaigns, Alistair Currie, who is also a
father-of-one, looks into it.

5 ways to shrink humanity’s ecological footprint
The 2 August was Earth Overshoot Day, the day when humanity has consumed
all the resources that the planet can produce over the entire year. In this
guest post, former CEO of the Global Footprint Network, Laurel Hanscom,
lays out five steps we must take to shrink humanity’s ecological
footprint.

Africa paying a heavy price for population explosion
More than half of the people [8] added to the world’s population over the
rest of the century will be in sub-Saharan Africa. African experts indicate
its rapid population growth leads to serious repercussions, including
poverty, drought, exacerbating the food and education crises and even
fuelling terrorism.

Number of babies born in England & Wales hits lowest level since 2002
The total number of live births in England and Wales in 2022 was 605,479,
down 3.1% from the previous year. While many bemoan the declining
birthrate, and Musk and others shout about population collapse, Professor
Sarah Harper CBE, founder and director of the Oxford Institute of
Population Ageing and a former government adviser, said falling birth rates
in the West “is a good thing” and would help to address the “general
overconsumption that we have at the moment”. We couldn't agree more!

Representing PM at the Women Deliver Conference
The Women Deliver Conference in Rwanda is is one of the largest meetings to
advance gender equality, health, rights and the well-being of girls and
women. This year, we were delighted to enable PM Choice Ambassador, Joan
Kembabazi, to attend.
