Urge Del Taco to bring back its vegan options
Did you know that Del Taco started serving Beyond Meat back in 2019, but recently removed this cruelty-free meat alternative from its menus? We're thoroughly disappointed by this change. Will you join us in speaking up for animals?
This month, we’re urging fast-food chain Del Taco to bring back Beyond Meat across its restaurants. You can take part in this action by following the instructions here ([link removed]) and urging Del Taco to bring back its vegan options.

Animal Outlook successfully obtains records that Iowa’s Department of Agriculture
tried to hide
Last year Animal Outlook exposed horrific, animal-ag-industry-funded experiments ([link removed]) at North Carolina State University, studying the effects of a mass-killing method known as Ventilation Shutdown, or VSD. VSD involves shutting off all sources of ventilation in a barn and–as it is practiced in the industry–pumping in heat or steam (VSD+) until the animals die of suffocation or heat stroke. This unbelievably cruel method has been used throughout the country to kill millions of farmed animals in response to the avian influenza outbreak.
We have now used Iowa’s Open Records Law to obtain documents ([link removed]) related to the mass extermination of chickens in Buena Vista County, Iowa. These documents detail the use of VSD+ at six facilities and reveal that birds remained alive after being subjected to between one and a half and nearly five hours of VSD+; the remaining animals were killed either by being gassed or having their skulls manually or mechanically severed from their spinal columns. The reasons VSD+ was ineffective included poor insulation, which made facilities unsuited to the process, and “lack of attention to detail” in carrying it out. Initially, the documents redacted information about the (in)efficacy of VSD+. Animal Outlook successfully challenged those redactions, and the full records are now available here
([link removed]) .
These animals only existed for human consumption, and it's hard to imagine a worse way for them to die, even if VSD+ had been used “correctly.” Yet these records show that, somehow, sloppy implementation made the process even worse. The only way we can ensure that no more animals suffer like these birds did is to leave them, and all other animals, off our plates. Animal Outlook will continue to expose and work to end this barbaric process of mass extermination and other animal cruelties, while supporting you in your vegan journey. Will you join us to expose the truth Big Ag tries so hard to hide? ([link removed])
Experiments performed at North Carolina State University showed that chickens writhe, gasp, pant, stagger and even throw themselves against the walls of their confinement in a desperate attempt to escape. Eventually the birds collapse and, finally, die from heat and suffocation.

Journalist wins award for coverage of poultry industry practices
Congratulations Marina Bolotnikova of The Intercept and The Guardian for recently winning the Ann Cottrell Free Animal Reporting - Print Award for her coverage of poultry industry practices. Marina was presented this award last night at the 50th Annual National Press Club Journalism Awards Dinner. Marina covered our 2022 ventilation shutdown expose for The Intercept ([link removed]) , and more recently, along with Kenny Torella, covered our investigation of Jannat Farm ([link removed]) for Vox ([link removed]) . Thank you Marina for your dedication to exposing the truth of the horrors forced upon farmed animals.
