** Acknowledging the Cultural Intelligence of Canoe People

In May 2023, Cheane Bullock (Shinnecock) was part of a group of Tribal paddlers who embarked on a canoe journey from Boston Harbor to the Long Island Sound. Their journey was in recognition of the sovereign rights of the Native people who still reside in their traditional homelands. Read more. ([link removed])

** How Illegal Mining and Logging in the Peruvian Amazon are Exposing Indigenous Communities to the Risk of Modern Slavery
------------------------------------------------------------

The organizations Free the Slaves, an international NGO working to end the conditions that contribute to modern slavery, and Onampitsite Noshaninkaye Tzinani (ONOTZI), a Peruvian NGO working to promote the well being and development of Indigenous communities, conducted a research project to better illuminate the reality of modern slavery among Peru’s Indigenous communities. Following extensive fieldwork among four Indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon’s regions of Ucayali and Huánuco, their report found that Indigenous people are becoming increasingly vulnerable to modern slavery due to a series of multidimensional, interconnected vulnerabilities. ** Areas Where the Free, Prior & Informed Consent of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Have Not Been Obtained
------------------------------------------------------------

Co-published by Friends of the Earth US, Cultural Survival, and Instituto Maíra, the paper, “Protecting biodiversity from harmful financing: Areas Where the Free, Prior, Informed Consent (FPIC) of Indigenous and local communities have not been obtained,” demonstrates the vital role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities play in protecting biodiversity. It explains the nuances in how Free, Prior and Informed Consent is a unique right to Indigenous Peoples guaranteed under international law, whereas FPIC can be used as a best practice in engaging local communities. ** Cultural Survival and Partners Submit Report on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights for Mexico’s Universal Periodic Review

The current situation in Mexico is dangerous, mostly because of the high level of risk for Indigenous defenders that persists due to violence and intimidation by companies, drug cartels, and public officials, as well as lack of compliance with international standards on Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). In July 2023, Cultural Survival and our partner organization Tsilinkalli: Ediciones de la Casa Sonora, submitted a joint stakeholder report on the state of Indigenous rights in Mexico for the 45th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the UN Human Rights Council. ** Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Deskaheh's Campaign to the League of Nations

On July 14, 1923, the Hereditary Chief of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Deskaheh Levi General (Cayuga), traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, to speak before the League of Nations. He sought to obtain international recognition of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Read more. ([link removed])

** Indigenous Women Speaking through Sounds
------------------------------------------------------------

Indigenous Women in Radio 2023, a three-day event organized by Cultural Survival for women from Indigenous community radio stations around the country, took place July 28-30 in Maní, Yucatán, Mexico. ** Exchanging Maya Experiences in the Yucatán Peninsula and Chiapas

Over the past year, a diverse range of projects and gatherings took place in the southern region of Mexico, to foster new ideas and strengthen networks for community work. Throughout these months, Cultural Survival facilitated the participation of Keepers of the Earth Fund and Indigenous Community Media Fund grant partners and Indigenous Youth Fellows in various activities that included open dialogues and exchanges of knowledge in different areas. ** Meet Our First Cohort of 2023 Indigenous Youth Fellows

On International Youth Day, Cultural Survival was pleased to announce our first cohort of 2023 Indigenous Youth Fellows as part of our Capacity Building Program. Our Indigenous Youth Fellowship supports young Indigenous leaders between the ages of 18-28 who are working to transform their communities and create opportunities for the elevation, defense, and strengthening of their cultures and traditions while developing their leadership, organizational, and project management skills. On August 31, International Day for People of African Descent commemorates the extraordinary cultures and diversity of people from the motherland and also pays homage to the sacrifices made by Africans with regard to the development of our societies through history. In this radio program, we honor freedom fighters and rebellion leaders Louis van Mauritius and Abraham van der Kaap.

Using Theatre to Combat Social Ills - Amazon Theatrix Ensemble ([link removed])
Young girls on the shore of Lake Victoria are exploited by men who conduct business in the area. The Amazon Theatrix ensemble is a group of young people from the Luo community in Kisumu, Kenya, who use Theatre to empower young girls. We spoke to Jones Arodi Okoth (Luo).

Transforming Pastoralist Women ([link removed])
During our recent visit to Kenya, Cultural Survival stopped in Kajiado County to speak to Noah Solonka Tompo (Maasai) from the Transforming Pastoralist Women Initiative in Kajiado County, Kenya. This organization also provides counseling services to Indigenous youth who are struggling with drug addiction.

El Día Internacional del Recuerdo de la Trata de Esclavos y de su Abolición se conmemora el 23 de agosto de cada año con el fin de “inscribir la tragedia del comercio de esclavos en la memoria de todos los pueblos”, así como hacer “una reflexión colectiva de las causas históricas, los métodos y las consecuencias” de la esclavitud. En este contexto, en Radio de Derechos Indígenas de Cultural Survival realizamos un programa especial en el que reflexionamos sobre la esclavitud y su abolición desde una perspectiva económica, es decir, entendiendo estos hechos en el marco del nacimiento y desarrollo del capitalismo.
