This summer, water temperatures in South Florida reached nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and a key reef was found almost completely bleached. Bleaching is the first step towards the devastating loss of a coral reef, and it could have disastrous impacts if we don’t act quickly to save the reefs. This is yet another early indication of what is to come for our reefs globally.
Healthy reefs are also important to Florida’s economy – from fishing to tourism - and we’re running out of time to protect these essential ecosystems. Scientists are shocked by the rate that coral is being bleached, and they’re ringing the alarm bells that if we don’t take action, we could be left with terrible consequences.
That’s why our SEEC Members are working so hard to keep up the fight to protect these reefs through more research and support so we can implement solutions to protect critical ecosystems like our reefs.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
