Matt Gaetz — wait, that can't be right — has authored an amendment to the 2024 defense spending bill to collect information on foreign coup leaders who have been trained by the US government. Shockingly, he — are we sure this is Matt Gaetz? — DOES have a point. At least 15 officers trained by the US have participated in African coups, but the actual number is unknown, because, shocker, the Pentagon doesn't bother to keep or share such records. American military training in other countries does not exactly have a great track record of promoting peace and democracy (remember a guy by the name of "Osama bin Laden?"), and Congress should absolutely be questioning whether tax dollars should be funneled into such far-flung, misguided adventures.
